The bug dogs start the training between eight to twelve months. The approximate training period is 800 to 1000 hours. The scent dogs needs to be certified by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA) after the completion of the training for the dog to take up the job.


The scent detection canines, even though are assigned with responsibilities, demand extreme care and attention from the dog handlers. Just like any other dogs, the bug dogs too are social animals seeking attention from their masters. The dogs are highly trained so that they can even distinguish the live bugs from the dead ones. They are taught the search patterns as the bed bugs have certain peculiar hiding spots, like mattresses, carpets, closets, etc. Once they come across the infested area, they would point it out with their nose to the dog handler for extermination procedures.
